Gyspy Wind 03:32
You can gather tea leaves and roll up your silver threads, or you can change the trade winds and dry-up the watershed. We can bless this silence, because the silence hurts, and we can choose our lovers, our lovers are the curse. You can walk the East creek or get lost in the oaks, or you can run the soft sands on the golden coast. I will dance the Uinta all the way to Santa Fe, and I will dust off our sandals when we see the rain again. You will remember me chasing the golden hills at dusk. While those fires are burning, your heart it fills with lust. Yeah sure, my family will miss me and my lovers will mourn, but I send for the torches and watch the fires burn.

I reached out to touch the darkest seas. Just like everyone who wants to be free. Friend, the open water brings a chill. I'm better off on land, where it's still. I set out to climb the tallest peak Just to try to be as strong as I could be. When I set stance alone at the top of the world, a sparrow brought me back down to my feet. Well nothing is ever set in stone thats why I roam, I roam, I roam. Here and far and to every reaching star, but there sure is no place like home. My voice did echo through the trees. Every note was carried by the breeze. The pines sighed with wisping, waving arms. That little river carried me home. I've grown too tired now for a thrill. So I let my roots grow far under the hill The rains fall through the night I sure won't beg the gods to see sunlight. Well nothing is ever set in stone thats why I roam, I roam, I roam. Here and far and to every reaching star but, there sure is no place like home.

The ramblers are chasing the sun like it's gold. Yeah, they roam, they roam, they roam. I'll wash all the dirt from my poor skin, and stand up and try again. When the winter winds blow through I'll be gone. Yeah, I'll run, I'll run, I'll run. I'll call out your name in the waking of the dawn, but you're gone, you're gone, you're gone. I best be leaving while I've got the legs to carry me. I best be trying to forget every inch of you, because I'm running circles in my head, and the cold hearted queen invites me to her bed. I was born into trouble so there's trouble where I go, Yeah I know, I know, I know. It's plain to see somethings were meant and somethings will never be.
4.
I cant stop this wanderin' heart Wanderin heart of mine So I sit up 'til the morning light with the highway on my mind Brief were my days among you and my voice shall surely fade From the confines of your conscience As I walk across the glade. I can't find the words to say 'Cause my heart is bound to change You wont find me at sunrise where the sun sets in the sage My love will be forgotten from your hearts and from your eyes If there's no truth in what your dreaming Fare thee well, my sweet demise. Maybe somewhere down the line When this wanderin' heart gets tired I'll come to your window, babe, tell me it's gonna be alright The songs we sing about it, oh, how the years they come and go I guess I'll always have this wanderin' heart And I'll always have my song.

My father's eyes were cold and still. He shot up the bank, and burned out the mill. He said, "write down the lessons you have learned." So, I drank all his liquor and spent all I earned, now I'm singin -umm hmm, ridin' high umm hmm, ridin' high. My father's eyes were deep and old. Yeah, he saw what he wanted and lived what he told. He said, "You never mess with a woman's heart." So I did what I saw, I went and tore one apart, now I'm singin- umm hmm, ridin' high umm hmm, ridin' high. My father's eyes were silvery wild. Yeah, he lost his way when I was a child. Well, he lived by the beat of the old wild sun. Now, I'm standing in the doorway with my father's gun, singing- umm hmm, ridin' high umm hmm, ridin' high. My father's eyes were just like mine. Yeah, we're cast from the same mold, him and I. I'm not proud or ashamed to be his son. I guess I'm just like him, Ma, I can't help it none.

I'm sure by now, we've all heard the line, that sooner or later we're all gonna die. Yeah, but I know for sure that I ain't going down, without a kick and a scream. The big man will tell us to lay on the tracks. While his workers silently stab in our backs, the daggers of conformity and the rigging of tax, yeah, but it just seems like the right thing to do. How can we turn back the days? Get back to when we felt safe. Oh, how, how can we live? Live in sweet, sweet harmony. The numbing of freedom with the blinding of fact, with, prescribed pain killin' pills for our backs, and all the while, they're still laying tracks, right over grandpa's farm. Driving the roads I grew up along. Paved with the statues of financial row. Once I remember where those willows did grow, on the dirt road to grandpa's farm. How can we turn back the days? Get back to when we felt safe. Oh, how, how can we live? Live in sweet, sweet harmony. I guess I'm done running from the future of late. Rollin my wagon from state to state. Just trying to find a town where I can settle my fate, all the while feedin' the man. How can we turn back the days? Get back to when we felt safe. Oh, how, how can we live? Live in sweet, sweet harmony.

Half moon rise, half moon rise, saw those wolves with my very own eyes. They're gone in the morning with the rising tides, you'd better run cause you can hide. Cardinal feathers in the sun. Always on the look-out, always on the run. Perched so tall in the tree of mine, calls me close in 4/4 time. White bark pine, white bark pine, found a good patch now you're doing fine. The trade winds came and made you dance all night, better hold on 'till the morning light. Green moss grows in the evening rain, the Hudson River moans that she's in pain. The smoke stacks set the fog on fire man, that river looks like she's tired. The Federales trade for blood, the illusion of order in this rising flood. Well, I got the truth and the clothes on my back, better buy a gun and a shotfgun shack! White bark pine, white bark pine, found a good patch now you're doing fine. The trade winds came and made you dance all night, better hold on 'till the morning light.

Bloodlines 04:49
Our brothers will fight and death may become. So sultans and kings can bask in the sun The bloodline runs cold, and deeper than you think and I’ve been following in footsteps, thought I’d never be Yeah, its hard luck don’t you give up It’s the best part of being young. We’re cut from the same cloth, a jewel in the crown I’ve been walking the same walk, in this dusty old town D Yeah, we change like the wind until we find higher ground D Never taking a moment to just stick around. Yeah, its hard luck But, don’t you give up It’s the best part of being young. You may see it fit, to follow in stride The blood from your veins, or that fire in your eye Well, I spent all my days on falling into place Never planted the seed until my bloodline was traced Yeah, its hard luck But, don’t you give up It’s the best part of being young.

So we're singing songs in wishing wells While Lady Mona cast a spell on us And our purpose will be clear Burn my eyes with colors and with fears And we're tracing tracks of borrowed lines While sun and moon tell us the time, let's see Well I'm just the same as you And you're just the same as me Lady Mona, woodland queen Can you tell us all you've seen tonight? Is it the symmetry of stars? Have you spoken with the gods? Come down. So we grin and bear the grieving truth While cistern ghosts dance on the roof, I know We'll be good souls instead We're just fraying from the thread Beneath the see-through veil of time I see that ghost and paradigm, it's true Well, I can be a good man too Hell, I'm just the same as you Lady Mona, cast your spell Send the good souls straight to hell, tonight Lady Mona, woodland queen Can you tell us all you've seen tonight? Is it the symmetry of stars? Have you spoken with the gods? Come down.

Can you learn to love me, baby? Can you learn to love me, honey? Will you be there when I stumble home? I drank too much whiskey, baby. I drank too much gin, my honey. Watch out, woman! I'm comin' home! Don't pack up them boxes, baby Don't pack up them dishes, honey I'll quit drinkin' when the sun comes up. I ain't got no money, baby but I'll treat you like a lady come and have a dance with me tonight! Can you learn to love me, baby? Can you learn to love me, honey? Will you be there when I stumble home?

I can smell it from a mile away and I can't say no. I can smell it from a mile away and I won't let go. Yeah, that bourbon, babe, burns a hole in my gut. Well, I sure a hell can't get enough of that stuff. I can smell it from a mile away and I can't say no. I can smell it from a mile away and I won't let go. Yeah, that cocaine, babe, running through my veins. I gotta get clean, gonna make a change. Yeah, this in time will pass I know that I'll be alright This in time will pass. I can smell it from a mile away and I can't say no. I can smell it from a mile away and I won't let go. Yeah, them dirty old pills, be knockin' me off of my feet. You can't get along when you lie and cheat. I can smell it from a mile away and I can't say no. I can smell it from a mile away and I won't let go. Yeah, that perfume, babe, yeah it's drivin' me nuts I don't think I'm a man you could ever trust.

Some Light 03:13
Don't tell me East from West white from black right from wrong or kind from mean I've seen the best of times the finest lines the in-between's No, I'm not a kid anymore I can find what I'm looking for but I still might need some light when i'm steering my ship in the dead of the night yeah, i still might need some light. I've seen wars and peace floods and droughts kings and queens have's and have-nots I've seen the rich and poor the dim lit store the double wide and the empty car-lot No, I'm not a kid anymore I can find what I'm looking for but I still might need some light when i'm steering my ship in the dead of the night yeah, i still might need some light. I've felt the closed fist The steel toe boot a broken heart in that cold dark room I've felt the love of friends the hand that lends the slate is clean don't let the darkness loom No, I'm not a kid anymore I can find what I'm looking for but I still might need some light when i'm steering my ship in the dead of the night yeah, i still might need some light.

I'll pick up all of my things and head out onto the coast. Leaving trails of the past, living young, living fast. No, I ain't going back home, no, I ain't going back home. The old freedom bells have run out their tune and notes hang high and gallantly loom with a constant misleading eye, they assume that with time it can all be worked out, yeah, but I'm sure not sticking around. That old whistlin' train is coming my way step on, step off take it where you must I belong on the train going west, I belong on the train going west. I'll take all the things I've learned, and map out the hills in a day. Trying hard not leave, trying hard not to stay, but I've run out of places to go, yeah, I've run out of things to say. I"ll move every stone that rolls in my path. Taking note of the good, taking note of the bad. Crossing lines with the devil who set me on fire and I'm still trying to put it out, yeah I'm still trying to put it out. I'll leave with the sunrise or the darkness of night. Making sure to cover my tracks. Raise my glass to the gods on the hillside and, no I ain't going back, no I aint going back. That old whistlin' train is coming my way step on, step off take it where you must I belong on the train going west, I belong on the train going west.

about

The Desert Kind Portland, Oregon

The Desert Kind is the brainchild of Portland-based songwriter Chris Bigley. Beginning as a mostly unplugged Americana outfit, Bigley shifted gears in 2015, stripping the live presentation to a duo--himself and bassist J Elwood Johncox, and emboldening their material with pulsing kick drums and crackling electric guitars. Anchored by Bigley’s writing, the band marches onward. ... more
